10 things you need to know about APA 7th edition. The differences between APA6 and APA 7 explained simply.

APA 7th edition: 10 things you may want to know.

You can checkout APA 7 at www.citemaker.com/apa7

1. Books - Place (and specifically "n.p") is no longer required. The publisher is now included for web sourced books. This was previously omitted.

2. Book and Journal Editors are formatted differently to the previous edition where there is no chapter or article title.  The inclusion of the editor's role in journals is consistent with other source types; e.g. the role of director for a film or video.

3. Experiential sources, such as museum visits and artistic performances, are now formally acknowledged. This was not previously the case and is a catch-up with other styles.

4. Legal and Government sources - there is greater clarity that was missing for court proceedings, legislation, parliamentary proceeding, and testimonies (new). These soruces are very US-oriented and it will take us additional time to update for other jurisdictions.

5. Historical sources now include the original year of publication - bracketed at the end of a citation similar to reprints. E.g. "(Original work published ca. 350 B.C.E)"; which will make Heads of History departments very very happy!

6. Religious texts are now included in reference lists representing a departure from previous practice and other styles.

7, Social Media has been formalized and the platform (Facebook, Twitter, etc) is now included similar to the publisher for a book. Previously the site name was omitted. Where there is no date (n.d.) for a post (e.g. a personal or organization's profile page) "Retrieved + date" has been reinstated. The retrieved date was dropped entirely in the 6th edition.

8. Websites - "Retrieved from" is no longer required before a static URL. The only exception where a retrieved date is included for social media and fluid website content.

9. Wikipedia is now acknowledged as a reputable source - which should be of great relief to students. So too are TED Conferences and webinars.

10. The above list is not exhaustive and a few minor updates have not been mentioned. CiteMaker will also soon release its "CiteWeb" chrome extension for automatically citing websites. This is in addition to ISBN (WorldCat) and BibTex (google scholar and journals) automatically cited by CiteMaker.
